Last October 20–23, 2025, I joined the Japan PhD Evolutionary Meeting, where PhD students from across Japan gathered to share research, exchange ideas, and build connections in the field of evolutionary biology.
I truly enjoyed the conference, not just for the science, but for the sense of community. Many of us know how isolating research can feel at times. Meeting people who work in similar fields, who understand the same struggles and excitement, was incredibly comforting. One of the highlights was the 5-minute “fast dating” activity, where we switched conversation partners every few minutes. It was such a fun and effective way to talk to as many people as possible.
Of course, the organizers didn’t just feed our minds, they fed our stomachs too. The food throughout the conference was amazing, and honestly, it made the long days even more enjoyable (LMAO).
Beyond the scientific experience, we were all in awe of the architecture and world-class facilities of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST). We ended up taking photos literally everywhere we went. We also got the chance to visit one of the largest aquariums in the world, the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, which was a highlight of the trip.
As we headed home and said our goodbyes, many of us exchanged social media accounts, and I even received invitations to grab a meal when I visit the Kanto region. I’m really looking forward to reconnecting with them in the future!
